Why Feed Natural Treats to Your Dog

Why Feed Natural Treats to Your Dog

We know how important it is to eat natural foods. It’s why every grocery retailer in Canada has a section or entire aisle dedicated to organic sustenance. Households do their best to fill their pantries accordingly, ensuring that their family consumes nutrients that have not been compromised by geneticists and producers whose main mission is to maximize shelf-life. Furry companions are also afforded this attention to healthier living, which is a fortunate spillover effect of the humanization of pet food:

“Owners are becoming more knowledgeable about dog food and eager to understand ingredient lists and nutrition facts […] More owners seek high-quality and healthier, tastier and natural and organic offerings for their companions.”  (Agriculture Canada)

Subsequently, big retailers have taken notice of the shift in the way people feed their dogs. Recently, one of the largest pet retailers in North America announced that they would stop selling dog food with artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

While you have taken steps to feed your dog natural foods for their two-to-three square meals per day, you’re wondering if the same attention to labels is required of their treats. Isn’t it OK to ease up when it comes to rewards and snacks? It isn’t. Here’s why.

3 Reasons Why It’s Important to the Health of Your Dog to Choose Treats With All Natural Ingredients

Does The Body Good

Physiologically your dog should be eating all-natural ingredients for all meals and snacks. By providing them with the good fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that Mother Nature (and veterinarians) intended you will have a leaner, amiable, more energetic, and obedient companion with a glistening coat. But taking your foot off the gas when it comes to treats, you may do more than rob them of optimal physical health. It may actually be dangerous.

How?

For one, most processed treats on the market have been manufactured from animals that have been pumped full of antibiotics. As humans, we know to only consume antibiotics for a short period of time when fighting an infection or illness. To take them regularly would render our natural immune systems useless. The same is true for canines. If they continue to eat processed treats, their immune system will suffer.

In addition, processed treats come with an increased risk of allergic reactions. Alternatively, handcrafted, all-natural treats that have been made from locally sourced ingredients without additives, hormones, or preservatives are less likely to contain common triggers of canine allergy such as corn, soy, or wheat. Or if they do, it will be explicitly stated on the ingredient list. Essentially, everything is traceable. You certainly can’t say the same for processed treats. For further peace of mind when it comes to allergy concerns, choose single ingredient dog treats.

Great for Their Mental and Emotional State Too

It’s certainly true that when your dog is physically healthier, they feel better, and will therefore be happier. However, there’s some real science behind the mental health benefits of natural dog treats. Excessively processed treats cause irritation, inflammation, and create an imbalance in your dog’s gut flora. Studies have proven that dysbiosis and inflammation of the gut are a causation factor of mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression in humans, and the same is true of dogs. Your dog’s stomach and brain are deeply connected, and any imbalance in the former may directly contribute to stress, thus affecting them mentally and emotionally. Ironically, the very treats that you thought were making him or her happy could actually have had the opposite effect. If you want a mentally and emotionally healthy pup, feed them naturally.

Your Dog Instinctively Knows What They Are Supposed to Eat

Many humans assume that their dog is picky when it comes to the treats they like. However, there are thousands of years of DNA leading the charge in their taste buds. Their genetics guides them towards foods that their ancestors had access to. You’d better believe that the original wolves, mastiffs, Afghan-hounds, Sheepdogs, and Shar Peis didn’t have humans shopping for their snacks at a local Dollarama. Instead, they had to eat from what the earth provided. Over time a genetic code was created and solidified to the point that it persists in your pup today, no matter the mutt or breed. Give your furry family members what they need by feeding them all-natural ingredients for their rewards and treats.
